Why instances are the central feature

Each Prism instance can keep its own Minecraft version, mods, resource packs, worlds and settings. This reduces conflicts when you alternate between vanilla, Fabric, Forge, Quilt or older game versions.

Isolation also makes troubleshooting clearer because a broken experimental pack does not have to share files with a stable setup. Backups remain necessary before updating a loader, modpack or world.

Choose an official package

Prism publishes downloads and platform instructions through prismlauncher.org. Its official repository is owned by the PrismLauncher GitHub organization.

Windows, macOS and Linux builds are supported, with several native and portable choices on Linux. Distribution packages can have different update paths, so record whether an installation came from the project, a system repository or Flathub.

1. Open the project site

   Begin at prismlauncher.org and select the download instructions for your operating system.

2. Match the architecture

   Choose the package intended for your system and processor rather than a similarly named reupload.

3. Update through the same channel

   Use the mechanism documented for the package you installed.

Create a clean first instance

Start with a current vanilla instance and complete Microsoft authentication through the launcher flow. Once it launches successfully, create a separate instance for a loader or modpack.

Prism can install common mod loaders and obtain individual mods or modpacks from supported catalogs. Always review loader, game version and dependency compatibility before applying an update.

Prism, MultiMC and unofficial copies

Prism is a legitimate independent fork with its own maintainers, domain and releases. Its repository clearly says that it is a fork of MultiMC and is not endorsed by MultiMC.

That history does not make every build using Prism code an official Prism build. Forks and distribution packages must identify themselves accurately. Prefer upstream links when you need the project-maintained binary or authoritative instructions.

Troubleshoot without deleting instances

Prism exposes instance logs and Java settings that can identify a failure without removing worlds or reinstalling everything. Check the game version, loader, Java selection and most recent changed mod first.

Export or copy an instance before making a large change. When moving from MultiMC, use the official Prism migration guide and recheck the Java path if the devices or package formats differ.
