Minecraft launcher not opening: Windows checklist
A minimal, ordered checklist for an installer or launcher that will not open, install a version or start Java.
Avoid deleting every Minecraft folder at once. Identify whether setup, the launcher UI, version download or the Java child process is failing.
If setup does not open
Confirm Windows 10/11 x64, download from the canonical page and compare the SHA-256 digest. Review Windows Security history rather than disabling protection.
If the launcher opens but versions do not load
Check system time, HTTPS access, DNS, VPN and proxy behavior. The manifest request must complete before the catalog appears.
If installation stops
Open Activity and note the last file. Check free disk space and retry in a new local directory. Repeated failure on one URL can be a network or upstream issue.
If Java starts then closes
Remove a manual Java override, use 4096 MB, disable fullscreen and test a current release. Then update the graphics driver and inspect the last log lines.
Questions
Should I delete the entire .minecraft folder?
Not as a first step. It can remove worlds, screenshots and settings. Test a new dedicated directory and copy only what you need.
