Version manager guide
How to install any official Minecraft Java version
Install releases, snapshots, beta and alpha builds while keeping experimental worlds separate and Java compatible.
The official manifest contains multiple version channels. Installation is easy; protecting worlds from downgrade and snapshot changes is the part that deserves attention.
Choose the right channel
Releases are stable public builds. Snapshots test unfinished changes. Old beta and alpha entries preserve earlier development stages and can behave differently on modern systems.
- Open Versions.
- Select a channel or search an exact number.
- Read the release date and status before installing.
Install without launching
Use Install selected version when you want to prepare files first. The launcher downloads metadata, the client, libraries, assets and the matching Java runtime.
- Select one row in the catalog.
- Choose Install selected version.
- Wait for the Activity log to report completion.
Separate risky worlds
Snapshots and downgrades can permanently change world data. Use a dedicated game directory and copy any important save before opening it in a different version.
Expect limits in historical builds
Installing a build does not guarantee perfect compatibility with current graphics drivers, input APIs or online services. Test locally and keep expectations tied to the build era.
Questions
Why does an old version install but not start?
The files can be valid while the historical client conflicts with modern drivers, Java behavior or operating-system changes. Check Activity, automatic Java and windowed mode.
