Mod-loader guide
Forge vs Fabric vs NeoForge: install safely
Understand Minecraft mod loaders, match loader and game versions, and prepare compatible profiles without risking your main worlds.
A mod loader is version-specific infrastructure, not a universal mod switch. The game version, loader version and every mod must agree.
Know the role of each loader
Fabric emphasizes a lightweight toolchain and broad version cadence. Forge has a long-established ecosystem. NeoForge is a separate loader with its own documentation and version support.
Prepare the vanilla version first
Install the target vanilla Minecraft version, close the launcher and run the loader installer from its official source. Point it to the same dedicated game directory.
- Back up saves.
- Install the exact vanilla version.
- Run the official loader installer.
- Reopen the launcher and look for the new local profile.
Keep mods exact
A mod for Fabric is not automatically a Forge or NeoForge mod. Confirm loader, Minecraft version and required dependencies on the project page.
Current beta boundary
Minecraft Free Launcher 0.1.0 does not install mod loaders with one click. It can discover compatible local profiles after their official installer creates them. Native loader management is roadmap work.
Questions
Can Forge and Fabric use the same mods?
Usually no. Mods are built for a specific loader API unless the author explicitly publishes separate compatible files.
